About

As I make a living out of web hosting and selling virtual private servers (VPSs) and dedicated servers, it’s nice to have my own private little VPS on which I can test out various scripts and ideas, and also to run various remote monitoring and checking routines on our ever-growing family of servers and VPSs (This VPS is intentionally hosted at a different data-center, so that it can also be used for remote monitoring).

I also wanted to demonstrate to a couple of people that you can do a lot with a little sometimes … This VPS actually has 6 gigabytes of disk space available (less what the operating system takes up) and runs in a measly 128Mb ** RAM! :-)

For the technically minded, crammed into that 128Mb of memory ** I’m running the following:

  • Apache (The web server)
  • Exim (The SMTP mail server)
  • MySQL (Database)
  • Named (DNS)
  • ProFTPd (FTP)
  • vm-Pop3d (The POP mail server)
  • PHP 4 (Yeah, I need to upgrade <g>)

The VPS is running on a Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU 5130 @ 2.00GHz and, last time I looked, had been up without a reboot for the best part of 100 days :-)

** Effective September 2008, due to all the work I’m throwing at this VPS to do, she’s had a bit of an upgrade and now enjoys the luxury of 384Mb RAM and a bunch more processing power :)

Privacy: I don’t collect any personally identifiable data via this site, and therefore have no plans to intrude on your privacy. I do, however, take a look at the stats every now and then to see where site visitors are coming from, and I use Google Analytics to get a quick overview of site traffic.
